Jon Reid is beginning his first year teaching choral music at Burnett Junior High after teaching 4 years at Veterans Memorial Middle School in Columbus, Georgia. Mr. Reid holds a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Bob Jones University and a Master of Music in Music Education from Boston University.
The choral program at Veterans Memorial Middle School grew exponentially under Mr. Reid’s direction, doubling in size in two years, and bringing the total number of young men in the program from three to thirty. Choirs at VMMS scored consistent superior ratings in both performance and music literacy through performance evaluations conducted by the Georgia Music Educators Association, and over 25 students successfully auditioned into the Georgia All State Choir under Mr. Reid’s direction.
In addition to his work at VMMS, Mr. Reid recently accepted an invitation to participate in a Georgia Department of Education committee to revise the Georgie Performance Standards for Music to guide choral directors across the state of Georgia in planning their curriculum. In 2017, Mr. Reid took an active role in the Voices of the Valley Children’s Choir of Columbus, GA, serving as acting Artistic Director for several months of their performance season. He is also a composer and arranger of sacred piano and choral music, with works published by Beckenhorst Press, the Lorenz Corporation, Chorister’s Guild, and Majesty Music.
Mr. Reid serves as an active member of the Texas Music Educators Association, the American Choral Directors Association, the Society for Research in Music Education, and the Organization of American Kodály Educators. He is excited to become a Burnett Buccaneer and to continue the Burnett choirs’ reputation for choral excellence.
