DR. NATHAN DAME begins his twelfth year of teaching choral music and serves as Director of Choral Activities at Wylie East High School. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Kansas, a Master of Arts in Music Education from Texas Woman’s University, and a Ph.D. in Music Education with an Emphasis in Choral Pedagogy and a minor in Leadership and Administration at the University of Kansas.
He has served on the music education and choral faculty of the University of Kansas and as a choral director at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. His drive to inspire students at all levels and abilities have provided him opportunities to create music in a variety of settings, as well as serve music educators in teaching conducting, choral music methods, and supervising student teachers. Choirs under his direction have consistently earned superior ratings and overall outstanding designations at regional and state contests, have been featured in performance at the Southwestern ACDA Convention, and have rapidly expanded in enrollment to become some of the largest choral programs in the area.
Dr. Dame has served in numerous leadership roles in his career and currently serves as the ACDA National Repertoire & Resources Chair for Junior High/Middle School Choirs and as Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Region 25 Vocal Chair. Past appointments have included TMEA Region 2 MS/JH Vocal Chair, Coordinator of Choral/Vocal Music for Denton and Denison ISD, and State Collegiate President of Kansas Music Educators Association (KMEA).
An active presenter, clinician-conductor, author, and adjudicator, he has appeared in numerous state, national, and international conferences, including the International Voice Foundation Symposium, national and regional conventions of ACDA, the NAfME National Music Education Conference, the National Conference on Middle School/Junior High Choral Music, Texas and Kansas MEA Clinic/Conventions, and the Texas Choral Directors Convention. He has published through the Choral Journal, ChoralNet, Southwestern Musician, Texas Music Education Research, Kansas Music Review, and RBC Publications, which used his compositions for the Texas UIL State Sight-Reading Contest. He frequently conducts choirs at district, regional, and international levels, serving most recently as tenor-bass choir clinician-conductor at the 23rd International Choral Festival in Bangkok, Thailand.
Dr. Dame is the author and recipient of numerous grants for arts advocacy initiatives including male singer recruitment, boychoir development, and music literacy. He has been fortunate to receive Excellence in Teaching awards from area school districts and has been named the North Texas Children’s Choir Teacher of the Year. Additionally, he serves as Executive Director of InspireChoir, an online networking community for choral music teachers, which he co-produces with his wife, Ashley. His affiliations include the National Association for Music Education, Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Choral Directors Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, American Choral Directors Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and Pi Kappa Lambda Music Honor Society.
